Tap is a great way to exercise, to develop rhythm, style and coordination. Many of the steps involve keeping your bodyweight over your feet, which means using your deep postural muscles – the muscles that wrap around your middle like a natural girdle. This not only finetunes your balance, it improves posture in your lower back.
The origins of the tap dance can be tracked all the way back to the mid-1800 and the clash of the musical influences across North America. There, a mix of African tribal, English, Scottish and Irish music and dances brought to life many new genres, including the dance style that was focused on the creation of tap sounds using shoe heel, toe and sliding of the shoes across the ground.
The CSTD Tap Syllabus was updated in 2017. The new tap syllabus is a complete training package with graduated exercises, amalgamations and dances suited to the target age group. CSTD Preliminary and Medal Tests are offered, beginning with Preliminary 1 which introduces basic barre and centre exercises, simple combinations and a tap dance. This gives students a real feeling of achievement and prepares them for the intricacies of more advanced steps and choreography.
