Jazz dance is an umbrella term encompassing several different styles of dance that became popular in the early 20th-century. Combining rhythm, expression and technique with aspects of a variety of popular and street music, jazz dance uses the body as an instrument to interpret the various styles. Forms of Jazz include the rhythmic and stylish Modern Jazz, incorporating lyrical and contemporary styles and the classical lines of Jazz Ballet.
Jazz showcases a dancer’s individual style and originality. This type of dancing is energetic and fun, consisting of unique moves, fancy footwork, big leaps and quick turns. To excel in Jazz, dancers need a strong background in Ballet, as it encourages strength and balance.
We teach the CSTD Modern Jazz Syllabus, which contains a body of work choreographed and developed into a sound progressive, developmental sequence by Rachelle Conroy and Sandra Breen. Some of Australia’s leading artists have contributed their choreography to the syllabus in both exercises and routines. The work is contemporary, technically challenging and a great preparation in all forms of jazz for today’s performance demands. This complete training system in jazz dance, combines strength, flexibility and jazz technique with elements of lyrical, contemporary, hip-hop and commercial jazz, ensuring versatility and strong performance skills in the students.
Students are expected to sit for a yearly progress examination. Examinations are held at the end of the year.
